Asda, the UK’s lowest price supermarket, has announced it is working with property developer and investment company, Macdonald Estates, to promote a new supermarket in Viewpark, Uddingston.
The company, recently named the UK’s Lowest-Priced Supermarket for the 15th consecutive year, is bringing forward proposals to invest approximately £14 million in the area with the construction of a 25,000 sq ft (sales area) supermarket and the creation of up to 200 new jobs.
If approved the plans will bring hundreds of new employment opportunities and provide more consumer choice, quality produce, and Asda’s famous low prices to the Uddingston area. A Proposal of Application Notice has been formally lodged with North Lanarkshire Council by Macdonald Estates, notifying of its intention to submit a planning application for a supermarket on the site.
The planned supermarket development will take in a vacant industrial unit forming part of Darrows Estate and an under-used football pitch at Laburnum Road, which has been declared surplus by the Council.
The planned development will deliver:
• A new Asda Store with a sales area of approximately 25,000 sq ft and a gross net area of 40,000 sq ft.
• An investment of around £14 million into the local economy
• Up to 200 new jobs in the town, with a mixture of full and part-time positions
• Up to 200 additional jobs during the construction of the store
• Asda’s range of quality products at affordable prices, with an emphasis on local suppliers where possible.
• Greater competition and choice for shoppers
• A petrol filling station
Lisa Rooke, Asda’s Property Communications Manager for Scotland, said:
“We are pleased to be launching our proposals for a new store in Viewpark and are keen to hear what the local community thinks of our plans. Our proposals will enable us to make a significant investment in the town and deliver up to 200 new jobs for local people.
“We believe that the new store can provide consumers with an improved choice on where to carry out their supermarket shopping, as well as bringing Asda’s quality products and famous low prices to the area.
“We are looking forward to consulting and working with the local community as our proposals progress and will be undertaking a programme of community engagement in the coming weeks.”
Followed a period of community engagement a planning application will be lodged later in the year.
Alistair Ness of Macdonald Estates said:
“We are delighted that Asda has chosen to support this project. The retailer has an excellent reputation, testament to which is it being named as Britain’s Favourite Supermarket. Our professional team will work with them in order to ensure we can deliver a supermarket that the area can be proud of.”
