The regeneration of the Clyde between Braehead and Renfrew advanced significantly today (Monday 27th June) with the inauguration of a brand new 7 acre public park and the opening of Kings Inch Road as a new four lane boulevard connecting Renfrew Town centre, the Renfrew Ferry and Braehead shopping centre.
Clyde View Park is the first new park to be built in the West of Scotland for many years. Featuring fountains, paths, cycleways, play areas, picnic areas, artwork, green space and a riverside walkway, it has been designed to encourage natural wildlife, flora and fauna, including an otter's holt to help the laying up of otters in the Clyde. The name, Clyde View Park, was chosen following a competition for suggestions from local residents. The Park is a major asset that will benefit local residents and the growing number of people living and working at Braehead and Renfrew Riverside.
Extending to 1 kilometre in length, Kings Inch Road has been transformed from a two lane local access road into a new four lane boulevard connecting Braehead with the Renfrew Ferry. In addition to improving traffic management, the new road will play a key role servicing new offices, Xscape Braehead (opening Spring 2006) and nearly 2000 new homes.
As well as funding Clyde View Park, Capital Shopping Centres has made a significant contribution to the £10 million programme of private sector investment made with its partners, Park Lane and Clydeport in the regeneration of Renfrew Riverside. The announcement today marks a significant milestone in the overall programme to regenerate 185 acres of brownfield land on the Clyde from Braehead to Renfrew Town Centre.
Commenting, Deputy Minister for Enterprise Allan Wilson said: 'The regeneration of The Clyde is playing a major role in the development of Scotland's economy and with Braehead and Renfrew Riverside, we now have 2 examples of the most outstanding riverside regeneration projects in Europe. Both of these projects have brought new investment, thousands of new jobs and new opportunities, of which the public park and upgraded road are the latest examples. I am therefore delighted to be joining the local community today to mark these new facilities."
Councillor Jim Harkins, Leader of Renfrewshire Council said: "Ten years ago Braehead was a brownfield site characterised by contaminated land and redundant industrial buildings. Today, it is an economic powerhouse that is driving the regeneration of the Clyde and creating new opportunities for our local communities. Braehead is widely recognised as an example of mixed-use regeneration, of which the new park is a welcome addition and enhances facilities for the local community".
Richard Cable, Capital Shopping Centres Development Director added: "Much has been achieved during the ten years since we started work on Braehead, now an enormously successful retail and leisure destination. This has formed a springboard for the next phase of development - the new park, new road and new investments such as Xscape are transforming the banks of the Clyde. Today marks an important step forward and I would like to pay tribute to Renfrewshire Council and our partners for helping us put Braehead, and Renfrew Riverside, firmly on the map". |
